Fish farming facts
Iceland’s fish farming laws are among the most stringent in the world. The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute periodically evaluates the potential impact of accidental escape on the wild salmon population. This research is called a risk assessment. Iceland is the only country in the world that carries out such an assessment.
It is not a simple task to fulfill all the requirements that fish farming has to adhere to and get the permits to operate. But where fish farming has been allowed to operate it is in harmony with the environment, communities and the wild salmon population.
